You’ve made it through your first few lessons as a student pilot and today your CFI said, “you’re doing the radios.” Every student pilot has come face to face with the intimidating first radio call at some point in their life. Tackling aviation communications may seem like a huge task, but eventually you’ll be talking on the radio like a pro. If you’re not feeling ready to take over the radios from you CFI just yet, this course is just what you need! You’ll hear examples of proper phrasing on the radio, learn about the airspace we fly in, and most importantly develop proper VFR communication skills.
Communication 101
The first lesson in communicating with ATC is learning the lingo. You’ll be introduced to a variety of different phrases, and have the chance to listen to examples what communication between pilots and ATC sounds like. By the end of the lesson you will be able to understand what ATC is telling other pilots.
Uncontrolled Airports
Uncontrolled airports are the least restrictive of all the airports in the National Airspace System, but also hold the potential to be the most challenging. You’ll learn how to make concise radio calls to other pilots operating at the same airport, and make everyone’s experience safer.
Controlled Airports
Class D airspace is the best place for new pilots to learn how to communicate with ATC. Airports in class D airspace introduce two new controllers known as Ground and tower. You’ll also learn about clearances, and how to read back instructions to ATC. This lesson sets the foundation for communications at airports in busier airspace.
